From February 7 to February 13, POW WOW! Hawaii successfully kicked off its sixth year in Kaka’ako. The Hawaii portion is part of POW WOW! Worldwide, a week-long arts and music movement in which artists from around the globe gather in a specified area to appreciate and manifest their creative passions. Among the other places that host POW WOW! events are Southern California (Long Beach), Hong Kong (where it originally began in 2010), Taiwan and Japan. POW WOW! Worldwide appeared at the SXSW (South by Southwest) Festival in 2015. Other countries and cities, such as Guam, New Zealand and Washington D.C., are slated to hold their own POW WOW! Worldwide within the next few years.
Muralists from Hawaii, the mainland and other countries utilize Kaka’ako’s walls as their canvas, as they spend the entire week developing a new creation. In addition, the POW WOW! event includes artist discussions, a student showcase led by the Schools of Art and Music and a closing ceremony that ties all the POW WOW! artists together. The finale of POW WOW! Hawaii was held at Makers & Tasters, with live performances by the POW WOW! School of Music, The Green, Taimane Gardner and other local musicians.
