What truly drives Hawaii’s creative community together is watching the POW WOW! artists in action. On February 8, a fresh coat of white paint struck through a number of murals in the Kaka’ako area. More than 100 muralists from Oahu and other areas of the world traveled to Hawaii to create stunning installations and murals for all to see year-round. Muralists would start as early in the morning or work in the wee hours of the night to finish their murals as soon as possible. In between the mural paintings, Jeff Staple led artist panels and discussions at Kaka’ako Agora, and a print show sponsored by 1XRUN and RVCA was held at Lana Lane Studios on Tuesday, Feb. 9.
Above is an artist spotlight of two of POW WOW! Hawaii’s many muralists, Melody Sakura and Emma Dold. Both are currently art students in New York and were previously members of 808 Urban. You can find their mural in front of Hank’s Haute Dogs on Coral Street.
