‘Twas a “g’day” in Kaka’ako when a new coffee shop opened in Paiko on Auahi Street on February 1. Arvo (which translates ‘afternoon’ in Australian slang) is the first shop in Hawaii to serve Australian coffee.
This tiny coffee-brewed jungle, tucked away in the back of the succulent displays of Paiko, immediately captures the eyes of customers with its minimalistic outlook.
While Arvo’s focus is primarily coffee, the cafe also provides small meals, perfect for any time of the day. From vegemite spread on toast to a classic cheese croissant, these tiny dishes — presented on wooden cutting boards — put a new meaning to ‘breakfast all day’ (at least until 3).
Although the shop has been open for less than two weeks, it’s quickly gained a liking to customers who enjoyed the intimate feel of Brue Bar, but now in a slightly larger setting. Unlike its predecessor, Arvo brings its experience outdoors, with a few outdoor tables parallel to its indoor tables – not to mention the succulents that make for warm, subtle table decor.
The loaded avocado was true to its name – a literal “load” of ingredients. Toasted rye smothered in avocado spread, soon covered in a combination of feta cheese and tomatoes. It was an interesting, but complementary, type of meal, mashing all sorts of ingredients into one.
The prosciutto and cheese croissant, which is pictured above, brought a twist to a classic breakfast sandwich. Melted cheese was smothered on a toasted croissant, with prosciutto to top off the meal.
Arvo has also served as a mini-headquarters for Pow Wow! Hawaii artists and those who pass by the murals, which could attribute to its connection with Pow Wow! Hawaii (the signage and menus were created by Jeff Gress, founder of Lana Lane Studios and the director of Pow Wow! Worldwide).
We look forward to what this Aussie-themed cafe has up its sleeves in the months and years to follow!
